FAQ

The Singer's Shop

When considering voice lessons, remember:
Improving the voice takes time.    Compare it to studying any other type of musical instrument -- piano, guitar, flute, etc.  Don’t expect to be “great” in six weeks. Most beginning voice students should see significant change in their singing within three to six months of study.

Achieving vocal progress takes personal commitment. Training the voice is largely a matter of intrinsic muscular development.  Just as athletes maintain a regular training schedule, students of singing should devote at least a half-hour daily practice to vocal exercises, with additional time spent on repertoire assigned for development.

At NOVA Academy, tremendous emphasis is placed on developing  a healthy vocal technique that reflects a strong, focused tone and the ability to produce a variety of vocal styles.
.

Just as each student is different, every studio has a unique teaching style.  Learning is maximized when the student is working with a teacher who is compatible with his/her musical goals and disposition.
NOVA Academy invites you to try a free 30-minute introductory voice lesson.

VOICE LESSONS

At NOVA Academy, classical vocal studies are based on a 12-week quarter system. Private Lessons are set up on an appointment basis and are priced according to age and experience levels.

NOVAA offers private lessons in all aspects of vocal performance.  Lessons are personalized for each student to encourage a love of music, develop specific skills of technique and musicianship, and inspire creative expression. Students in our Individual Instruction program are given opportunities to perform, from informal performance studios to artist master classes and recitals. Length of instruction is based on age and technique levels; 30, 45, and 60-minute lessons are offered.

Depending on the results of a short interview, beginning music studies may be helpful prior to studying private voice. It is highly recommended that students with no previous musical training enroll in a music fundamentals class before starting vocal lessons.

Audio equipment is provided for students to record their lessons. Additionally, lesson sheets are provided to help you track your progress, record assignments, etc.  In Voice Lessons, handout sheets of musical examples, diction exercises, etc. will be provided based upon the needs of the Student.  Students will need to purchase music for study as assigned.  For your convenience, music books used in lessons are available online through NOVAA's website.

CLASS VOICE
This 10-week course is recommended for young singers, church or community
choir participants, or community theater performers who have not yet held a role.
Understanding your Vocal Instrument is crucial in developing a healthy singing technique.  Topics in this course Include Vocal and Supporting Anatomy, Focus, Pitch Accuracy, Articulation, and introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet. Minimum Class size: 3, Maximum: 8.

PRIVATE VOICE LESSONS
Private voice lessons are scheduled by appointment.  No pre-requisite; however, because the ability to read music and efficient use of keyboard are directly related to vocal progress, a placement test may be required to assess the needs of the student.  Inadequate vocal experience and understanding of music theory will be recommended to a music fundamentals class.

REPERTOIRE / ROLE COACHING
Repertoire not assigned by a NOVAA Instructor may not be addressed in regular private lessons.  If a student enrolled in private voice receives a role in a production, or wants to study songs not assigned by an Instructor, special arrangements may be made to coach the  project.

Repertoire/role coaching will be based upon needs of the project in question and individual performance needs of the student. One assessment session, no longer than 45 minutes will determine the individual performance needs of the student; the assessment session will cost the current rate of one 45-minute voice lesson.  The results of this assessment session will determine the number of coaching sessions required, as well as the cost per session.

Coaching is also available to singers not currently enrolled in NOVAA's Private Vocal Instruction Program.  Please call 330-342-7827 or email NOVAA to schedule an evaluation session.
